Extractions

Tooth Removal consists of extracting irreperably damaged or decayed teeth.

Your dentist will make every effort to restore the tooth before considering tooth extraction.

You should expect your dentist to do the following:

• Ask you about your medical history
• Ask you about your dental history
• Ask you about any pain or discomfort you have been experiencing
• Advise the best course of action
• If necessary, carry out the tooth removal under local anaesthetic

• For the first 24 hours, avoid hot food and drinks
• For the first 24 hours, avoid rinsing your mouth, with or without mouthwash
• After 24 hours, gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water after each meal
• If the socket bleeds, apply pressure by biting down on a clean, rolled up handkerchief placed over the affected area until bleeding stops

• Try to eat softer foods for a few days until you're used to chewing with your remaining teeth
• Brush gently with a soft toothbrush, taking special care to not disrupt the blood clot in the socket
• Take any antibiotics you've been prescribed as instructed
